The number of grants awarded may be balanced towards the number of postdoctoral grants.
The principal investigator must have a PhD/doctoral degree and should hold at least 20% employment at the applicant institution by the time of submission and during the entire project period.
It is also possible to be an external project investigator for a PhD fellowship at a non-university hospital in the region (cf. the call). If this is the case, the rights and responsibilities of the principal investigator in relation to the project should be specified in a separate written agreement between the institutions involved.
The principal investigator is responsible for the implementation and daily operations of the research project and will be the academic supervisor or co-supervisor of the PhD candidate. It is expected that guidelines for supervision at the chosen university are followed.
Duration and funding
Helse Sør-Øst RHF awards PhD fellowships for up to 3 full time equivalents (FTEs) per candidate. The grant may be set up as a 100% position for 3 years or as a 50% position for 6 years.
Candidates having started their doctoral degree without funding from other sources or who have received funding for a period <2 FTEs from their host institution, may be awarded a PhD grant of a shorter duration (min. 1 FTE) to complete their degree. Please describe this funding situation clearly in the project description.
Helse Sør-Øst RHF does not provide support to candidates who hold a similar degree or have received a full doctoral fellowship from Helse Sør-Øst RHF or another funding agent previously. It is not possible to split a single PhD award among several candidates.
The award is provided as a lump sum for PhD fellowships. The lump sum (1 225 000 NOK per FTE for 2023) includes salary and running costs for the project. It is not possible to apply for additional funding of running costs in this category.
The PhD Candidate
Candidates for the PhD fellowships should not be named. The name of the candidate should be reported to Helse Sør-Øst RHF immediately after appointment.
The candidate must be employed and have his/her main work address at the applicant institution during the entire fellowship period (exemption: any research term spent abroad).
The doctoral candidate him-/herself cannot be the principal investigator.
